CALL FOR ACTION
I hurried to the ladies’ room in hopes of salvaging a professional appearance, as tears streamed down my cheeks after hearing a presentation about “The Renewed Flourishing of Oklahoma City’s Northeast Side: The Heart of the African American Community” at the AIA Central Oklahoma Luncheon on November 14th, 2019. A month later, I attended the ULI Oklahoma NE OKC Food Security Symposium where top researchers and experts from across the United States shared information about food insecurity, specifically within the context of black communities. The 2020 Annual Developers’ Luncheon presented by Downtown OKC Partnership held on January 14th featured Albus Brooks, who is a national leader on urban issues. I was deeply moved by Mr. Brooks’ story and accomplishments that were often propelled by the desire to “connect diverse communities”. Do you see a theme emerging?
For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a heart for those who have suffered as a result of racism. I had read books and articles, watched movies and documentaries, and talked with my children and brother all out of a need to understand racism. But beginning in November of 2019 at the AIA Central Oklahoma Luncheon, that need to understand grew into a need to act. But how? Unbeknownst to me around the same time, SMPS was also feeling the need to act. In February 2020, the SMPS board approved the creation of a task force to “suggest initiatives and strategic objectives to increase awareness of and support for diversity, equity, and inclusion for our membership, the marketing profession and our members’ firms”. On May 25th of 2020, a cellphone video went viral, showing the horrific death of George Floyd due to an officer pinning Mr. Floyd to the ground with his knee on Floyd’s neck while a handcuffed Floyd repeats “I can’t breathe.” Suddenly, everyone in the world had joined the conversation about the problem of racism in the United States of America.
What Now?
Before scurrying to the ladies’ room after the November 2019 AIA COC Luncheon, I approached one of the presenters and said with tears in my eyes, “I don’t know what I can do. I don’t know what I have to offer. But I no longer want to be a part of the problem; I want to be a part of the solution.”

Call for Speakers
The AIA Oklahoma Conference on Architecture Planning Committee is looking for speakers for the 2021 Conference set to take place Thursday, September 30 and Friday, October 1 in Edmond, Oklahoma at the Edmond Conference Center. This year’s theme is Back to the Future. After an extraordinarily disruptive year, the conference theme will explore how architects are innovating for both the known and unknown of what lies ahead. Where is the future leading us in terms of design, practice, or sustainability? How will we get there, and what might the future look like?
Local speakers from Oklahoma will be given free conference registration for speaking. Speakers outside of Oklahoma will be given a travel stipend to assist with airfare, hotel, and meals; as well as free conference registration.
